150 million LoRaWAN® devices worldwide: the LoRa Alliance® milestone and the part OrionM2M® played

On 22 September 2026, at The Things Conference in Amsterdam, the LoRa Alliance® announced that 150 million LoRaWAN® devices are deployed worldwide, and that the number is growing by 25% a year. The full text is in the LoRa Alliance® press release.
What is behind the number
According to the alliance, growth comes from several sectors at once: utilities, buildings, industry and wearables, from smart locks and tracked pallets to panic buttons and staff safety badges.
“LoRaWAN has grown into an important part of the wireless connectivity landscape, working alongside Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and cellular networks,” said Alper Yegin, CEO of the LoRa Alliance®.
The ecosystem of the standard, in the alliance’s figures:
- more than 340 member organisations, 45 of which joined in 2026;
- more than 695 certified devices;
- close to 1,000 products in the alliance’s marketplace.
Members of the alliance report their own scale too: ZENNER Connect has 11.6 million sensors and more than 174,000 gateways in 15 countries, Netmore has 11.2 million active devices, The Things Industries has 6 million connected devices, Veolia has more than 4 million smart meters in France, and RAKwireless has shipped more than 2 million LoRaWAN® modules.
The part OrionM2M® played
Those 150 million include devices designed and manufactured in Almaty. Our path in the LoRaWAN® ecosystem, in brief:
- 2016. Orion System joined the LoRa Alliance®.
- 2019. Astel JSC selected OrionM2M® as technology provider for the launch of the largest LoRaWAN® network in Central Asia. In the same year we delivered our 1000th OrionGateway to partner operators.
- 2019. Semtech and OrionM2M® issued a joint press release on meters, gateways and smart lighting with LoRa® technology, and the alliance published a member release on the ORIONMETER RTU radio module with Modbus support for Industrial IoT.
- 2021. In Astana, 75,000 OrionM2M® radio modems were put into operation: water, electricity and gas meter readings go to suppliers twice a day. Technical losses of electricity fell by 10% a year, and of water by 15%.
All OrionM2M® equipment, including radio modems, meters and base stations, is built to LoRa Alliance® specifications and works in any LoRaWAN® network. More about the technology is in the knowledge base, and about the equipment in the catalogue.
